If you’re one of those people who always wanted to have a small herb garden of their own, you should know that it’s about time you made that happen. Here are seven useful tips on starting your own herb garden, so check them out and enjoy!

Set your goals and plan according to them

One of the most important steps when starting your own herb garden is setting your goals, so be sure to do that in order to plan everything out accordingly later on. First of all, you should sit down and think thoroughly what kind of herb garden you want. Besides that, maintaining the landscape is also essential if you want to keep your herbs healthy and prevent them from dying, so plan everything ahead and you won’t make a mistake.

Find the appropriate location for your herb garden

As herbs don’t need too much direct sunlight per day to grow properly, you should pick a location that offers just partial shade, so that your plants have just enough – nothing more or less than that. Of course, you should bear in mind that your kids and/or pets are likely to destroy the plants while running around, so you should probably opt for some kind of fence to protect your garden.

Plan your garden beds

Once you know where you’re herb garden will be located, the next thing to decide on is the type and size of your garden beds. Be sure to outline them the way you want before digging, so that you know exactly where your plants are going to live once your garden is done. However, if you prefer raised beds more than sunken ones, you should know that they can dry out more quickly, which can be potentially hazardous to your herbs.

Get a set of garden equipment you’ll use frequently

Investing in a set of quality garden equipment is the next step, so be sure to get some basic tools you’ll need on a daily basis. Some of these are a garden trowel, fork, weeder, pruning saw, and an extendable rake, as well as a garden hose that’s long enough so that you can water your plants without any trouble. Just give your best to avoid cheap plastic tools as much as you can, as these aren’t durable enough so you’ll probably have to buy another set, which isn’t as affordable as you initially thought.

Fertilize the soil

Fertilizing the soil is the next step, and it’s quite logical as not all soil is made equal. This basically means that not every type of soil is rich in nutrients required to help the plant properly grow. So, if you think that the soil you’re about to use isn’t really healthy, you should definitely opt for composting – a process of recycling organic materials that are regarded as waste products. You can use fertilizers as well, as long as they’re organic and not infused with chemicals.

Pick the herbs and plant them with care

The most exciting part of starting your own herb garden is picking the herbs and planting them with care. Of course, the choice is totally up to you and your personal preferences, but you should know that some seeds are more disease-resistant whereas some are naturally dependent on chemicals. So, if you want to go organic, you should probably opt for such seeds and organic fertilizers. After all, it’s much more environmentally friendly than the chemically treated herbs and soil, right?

Nurture your garden

The last step is nurturing your garden and taking care of it with love. Depending on the size of your garden, time requirements may vary from a few minutes a day to a few hours a day, and you should be prepared to do whatever it takes to keep your garden under control. As for watering, there’s a rule that says that plants need about one inch of water a week during a growing season. If it rains a lot, you won’t need to water them, of course.

As you can see, starting your own herb garden doesn’t have to be as challenging as you probably thought. All you have to do is to stick to our tips and trust us that you’ll do a great job, without a doubt!
