According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), ‘physical fitness’ is defined as the capacity to carry out everyday tasks with vigour and alertness without excessive fatigue. In addition, if you’re physically fit, you should perform what you do, daily, with enough energy to enjoy leisure-time pursuits and react to emergencies.

Exercise is crucial to good health. However, we tend to limit ourselves to one or two kinds of activities. People do what they like or what feels to be the most effective. This means that they sometimes ignore aspects of exercise and fitness because they don’t enjoy doing these. In truth, we should all be doing aerobics, stretching, strengthening as well as balance exercises.

What are the five components of physical fitness?

There are five elements of physical fitness that are often used in order to assess in what shape we are in. The components which make up total fitness are:

  • Cardiovascular endurance

Cardiovascular – or cardiorespiratory – endurance shows how well our body can supply fuel during physical activity by using the body’s circulatory and respiratory systems. Activities whichassist with improving cardiorespiratory endurance are those that cause an elevated heart rate for a sustained period of time.

  • Muscular strength

Muscular strength is the capacity that a muscle displays to make use of force during an activity. There are a number of ways in order to measure muscular strength, such as lifting or pushing a thing of a set weight in a specified position and assessing the consequences against any given population.

  • Muscular endurance

The concept of fitness includes muscular endurance, which is defined as the ability of a muscle to continue using force without tiring. Strength training builds bigger muscles but endurance training does not necessarily generate muscles of a larger size as the body focuses more on the cardiovascular system, making sure that the muscles receive the oxygenated blood they require to keep functioning.

  • Flexibility

‘Flexibility’ refers to the range of movement that a joint has. Flexibility is crucial because it enhances the ability to link activities together smoothly and can assist with preventing injuries. What’s more, flexibility is specific to each joint and depends on a number of variables, such as the tightness of ligaments and tendons.

  • Body Composition

Body composition is responsible for measuring the relative amounts of muscle, bone, water as well  fat in a person’s body. An individual can potentially retain the same weight but drastically change the ratio of each of the components that constitute the body.

What is ‘total fitness’?

The term ‘total fitness’ refers to how well the body operates in each of the elements of physical fitness as a whole. It is not enough just to be able to bench press your body weight. In order to attain total fitness you also need to determine how well you can handle running a mile as well as other activities. Total fitness is a combination of being fit and well in mind, body and spirit. All of these three areas are important and are interconnected.

We don’t have to be fanatical exercisers however we do need to work out at least three times per week and work up a sweat.  When you’re exercising, remain focused on the job in hand. The paybacks of routinely exercising routine will soon start to show with:

  • Your muscles getting firmer,
  • You having more energy,
  • You being able to walk faster up those hills, and
  • You having a greater general sense of well-being.

In terms of the spiritual side, a strong connection to the inner you gives a lot more confidence in life in addition to the ability to cope with stress. Total fitness is a lifestyle choice. It is about grabbing control of your life and living it to the full. We are not just a body but a mind too and of course we have spiritual connections. We need to get all of who we are in order.

If you need any assistance with your fitness routine it is recommended that you consult a qualified personal trainer to be able to assist you with this.
